FAQs
I care about the environment, is timber flooring a responsible choice?
- Yes! If you choose a timber floor, you are making a positive impact on climate change.
- Timber is a renewable source and it creates 5 times less carbon emissions than ceramic tiles.
- 50% of the weight of dried wood is carbon that has been absorbed from the atmosphere by the trees during their growth, lowering the amount of carbon dioxide.
- Timber is a perfect choice because you are helping to reduce the damage associated with climate change.
I am conscious about my family’s health and need to consider allergies and asthma; is timber a good choice?
- Unlike carpet, timber doesn’t trap dust and dirt.
- If you regularly maintain your timber floor, you can discourage dust and allergens and reduce the risk of respiratory problems.

How long will my timber floor last?
- Timber is natural and hardwearing. With the correct coating and regular maintenance, your timber floor may last up to 8 years! At that stage you can sand it back, recoat it and enjoy it for many more years. In fact some floors even outlive their owners!
- Regular care and maintenance is important to prolonging the beauty of your floor. Read more about the care and maintenance of your floor.
What should I consider when I am choosing the type of timber for my floor?
- You will need to consider the colour you like – there is a wide range of dark reds, browns right across to lighter hues of gold and pinks. You may also want to think about the overall finish and appearance you want, the grade of timber and the width of the boards to be used.
- Consider exactly which rooms in your home will have a timber floor. For instance, timber is ideal for high traffic areas but perhaps not suitable for wet areas such as bathrooms. To help you choose from a range of timbers, see hardwood floors.
How do I know what installation I need and what coating or finish I need?
- The type of installation will depend on your home and the location of the rooms. For instance if the timber floor is going over a concrete slab, on joists or over a structural sheet floor. The sanding and finishing will depend on what is appropriate for the type of timber you have chosen.
